On vacations

I took last week off. I went with my family to Maine and sat by a lake and read books and looked at the water and the green of the trees on the opposite shore and played cribbage and saw two movies at the quaint movie theater in town and generally felt relaxed and slowly rejuvenated. By the end of the week, I had become restless and ready to get back to work.

This morning I started reading Shopkeeping by Peter Miller and this has also helped me feel rejuvenated. I burnt myself out this past spring and it has taken longer than expected to feel energized again. Though I’m only a few pages in, I can see how “Shopkeeping” is going to help, by reminding me that there is an art to owning and operating a store and not one everyone is good at. I think I’m good at it, but it does require constancy. “You expect them to be there; you expect them to be good at what they do.”
